To demonstrate Watergardens', VIC, strong commitment to community safety and wellbeing, the centre hosted a Community Day in partnership with Victoria Police and Brimbank Council in October 2024. This event brought together first responders and local communities to foster stronger connections and nurture a sense of safety and support, particularly among local children, teenagers, parents and Watergardens centre visitors.
Over 7,000 people attended the Watergardens Community Day, along with 23 first responders and community organisations including Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Fire Rescue Victoria, Country Fire Authority, State Emergency Services, Border Force, Sheriff, RSPCA and Brimbank Youth Council. The connections made through the interactions between first responders and the community were extremely positive.
Over 40 hands-on activities were delivered throughout the day aimed at fostering connections, and educating the public about local community initiatives and services. Attendees enjoyed engaging with the drone demonstrations by the Victoria Police Drones Unit, the Mounted Unit’s stunning horses and The Border Force’s clever detector dogs. There were dedicated safety songs by Constable Maria which captured the attention of children who sang along with the tunes, coaching them through safety scenarios.
Ambulance Victoria ran CPR and bandaging education sessions, and said it was the busiest event they had ever attended. Kids’ activities included getting up close to emergency service vehicles, meet-and-greet sessions with Paw Patrol characters and face painting. The most exciting highlight was the Police Chopper soaring overhead, giving everyone a thrilling surprise.
The day wasn’t just about fun – it was also about giving back. Through raffle and BBQ sales, $4,800 was raised for Blue Light Victoria, supporting its mission to inspire, engage and equip young people to be their best selves. Retailers and contractors at Watergardens were also involved in the day through the donation of vouchers and prizes.
The Watergardens Community Day was a resounding success. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between the centre, local emergency services, community organisations and the local community, and the positive turnout demonstrated everyone’s commitment to and support for community safety.
