As part of QIC Real Estate’s 2022 NAIDOC Week celebrations, centres were proud to unveil a newly commissioned innovative art initiative ‘I am my Mother’s Teacher’ by award-winning Aboriginal artist, Cheryl Moggs, OAM, a proud descendant of the Bigambul people of Goondiwindi, capturing the importance of community, country, and inclusivity.
As a visual representation of our centres’ connection to Place, Country, Culture, People & Story, lapel pins and t-shirts featuring Cheryl Moggs’ artwork were launched at each centre to support the delivery of QIC’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) which aims to build respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to promote reconciliation. The lapel pins and t-shirts are proudly worn by all customer facing employees including security, cleaning, facilities, and customer service right across the real estate portfolio. The artwork was also displayed on all of our centres’ digital screens and social media platforms to show our support of NAIDOC Week’s 2022 theme – Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!
Centre teams also collaborated with their local Indigenous community and Elders to tell the story of NAIDOC Week 2022 through the implementation of a range of educational experiences which aimed to foster respect and gain appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, support cultural identity for Indigenous Australians and promote social cohesion within their communities. Activations ranged from Welcome to Country or Smoking Ceremonies to substantial Indigenous art murals that are used for cultural educational opportunities with the community, engaging workshops and Indigenous art markets.
When asked about her involvement with this initiative, Aunty Cheryl Moggs said “QIC continues to be champions of reconciliation, inclusivity, opportunities, and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As an artist, elder, teacher and cultural leader, we have built a great partnership together, filled with respect and much admiration.”
